A few years back when online influencer was starting to become a thing, I decided to make a list of people who I perceived to have plenty of "influence" online. The idea was to give them free merch in the hopes that they would post Zerothreetwo Clothing on their feeds. I didn't know what to look for. So I decided to look for Instagram accounts with a high follower count and high engagement rates. After making the list, I couldn't make myself to give 90% of these people our stuff.
They just didn't seem like real people. Staring at their feeds was almost like staring at a Kardashian. A pretty face with beautiful pictures, but no perceived skills. They likely had tons of people following them, but did they really have influence by posting bikini photos and the occasional sponsored post?
I decided that I wanted to have a candid conversation with someone in that space. It was a no brainer to ask Issa Please on the podcast. More than just a pretty face with a blog, she shares her honest thoughts online and is willing to talk about what it is like to be a blogger/content creator. She's someone who actually does something in the world, something more than just go to sponsored locations posting pretty pictures, someone with something to say. And boy, we went through a lot during our conversation.
We talked about the term "influencer", what's it like getting free stuff, how brands should choose online partners and how they should be approached, and the general life of a blogger/content creator. It's a long episode so let's get into it.
Enjoy the podcast!
