Zerothreetwo Conversations: Interviews with the Creative Class

May 21, 2018

Music is a big part of the Cebu identity. If you grew up in Cebu in the last twenty years, you've likely come across original local music in one way or another. At this point, it is part of our culture. It wasn't always like this. Back in the 90's, finding a musician who played original music was rare. Most everyone played covers, but somewhere along the way, original music got traction. Artists thrived and became known for the songs they created. This eruption in local music was the work of pioneers.

As a fan of local music, I wanted to get perspective and talk about what it was like back then compared to now. Who better to talk to than someone who has been active in the music scene in the past twenty years? Cattski is a mainstay and provides unique insight as to what it was like back then compared to today. She continues to be as active as ever. She's a founder of 22 Tango Records, they are the label responsible plenty of beautiful music, and the studio director of Room Eleven, the first professionalized recording studio in Cebu. Hopefully one day, through her efforts and the efforts of many talented musicians and artists in Cebu, our city will one day be called a Music City. For now, the journey towards that goal continues to sound better and better.

In this episode with Cattski, we talked about Cebu music now and then, her journey as an artist, the humble beginnings of 22 Tango Records, the current state of music, what it is like running a recording studio, and how to build a music city.

Enjoy the podcast!
